Brewer's Tavern

No one seems to be writing opinion pieces quite the way I would, so I decided to do it myself.

The name? Taverns are places where one goes to discuss the interesting events and things in the world, so this is my tavern.

I will offer my views on politics, economics, and whatever else strikes my fancy.
I will occasionally publish the entire article from another journal for purposes of causing discussion.

The Great Media Gulp

When WILLIAM SAFIRE opposes the likely decision of the Republicans in charge of the FCC, you might really wonder what American conservatism has come to. This is a guy who got his job with the New York Times because he had been a conservative writer for Richard Nixon in the President's office. But he is right. If the corporations get the media ownership restrictions removed, then we are going to end up like radio is right now. Three companies currently own 50% of all the radio stations in the US. The FCC wants to permit that kind of concentration for radio, TV and newspapers.

These are the sources of public opinion in this nation, and they have already failed to let us know what is really going on in the Florida Presidential election, in the invasion of Iraq, In Afghanistan, in the Intelligence failures that led to 9/11, in the tax cuts and the economy, and much, much more.

Surely no one believes that they will present MORE news and analysis if only three or four companies own all the media in every major city.

Read Safire's editorial. Then contact your congressperson. Then pray.
